Summer 2025

It is the first day of September at the end of Labor Day weekend on the eve of the first day of school. I guess this means the party is over, right? Summer 2025 is just about complete and it seems like the only thing left is to write the blog post about it 😂.

The summer was highlighted by many activities and events but as you will see, it also brought much needed rest. As I have done in years past, I will break down the past few months into 12 themes. Thanks for reading…

Beau smiles with his cousins, Johnny and Mik, at the Concerts Under the Pines series at Audubon Park in Spokane. Going to this park on Thursday evenings for live music was one of the favorite things I did this summer with the kids. Read on for 12 themes from the past 2.5 months.

Relaxation – As you read the below nine themes, you might think how did they even get a minute to relax? Well, I assure you, we did. No matter how busy summer is, the break from school and activities changes the pace of life. Our weekday mornings were less stressful and our evenings were so refreshing. Instead of attending a full slate of after school/after work obligations, we came home and just hung out. We ate dinner, watched shows, and went to bed early. Awww…summer is so sweet.

Although we did a lot, we also had many relaxing summer nights where we didn’t do much.

Colorful Beginning – On a Saturday at the beginning of summer, Sloan and I found ourselves covered in colored powder. We completed the Color Me Rad race in Liberty Lake, Washington, and truly enjoyed the experience. Although it was on the cooler side that morning, Sloan was captivated by the camaraderie that exists when people come together for a race. It was a RAD way to start the summer.

A selfie after we crossed the Color Me Rad selfie. It was a great way to kick off the summer.

Fests – But when the work week ended and the weekend arrived, we forgot about relaxation. Different festivals and community events drew us to different parks and spots all around Spokane. From Kids Fest to Unity in the Community to Cops & Kids to Millwood Daze to farmers markets to many more (literally), we had a lot of fun interacting with the community.

A look at the foam madness at Harmon Park in Hillyard. This was one of the most unique experiences we had at a community event this summer.

Thanks Be To God – At the last day of school in June, Fr. Mike Kwiatkowski told the kids we can’t take a vacation from God during summer because he doesn’t take one from us. Did I do a good job turning Fr. Mike’s preaching into practice? Well, I could do a lot better. Still, during this summer some cool things did happen. Sloan and Beau attended Catholic Summer Camp. I worshipped at a sunrise mass with a small hiking group led by Fr. Jeff. Sid and I became godparents again. Fr. Mike Schmitz’s Bible In A Year podcast took us through the prophetic books of Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and more. And, we continued to attend mass at St. Mary throughout the summer while also visiting the parishes of St. Louise (Bellevue) and St. Pat’s (Walla Walla).

Me, Sidney, Fr. Jeff Lewis, Fidela, Neteyam, and Dylan pose for a photo in the St. Mary sanctuary after the baptism on July 6, 2025. Thanks be to God! (Photo courtesy of Dylan/Fidela/Family).

Water Is it even summer if you aren’t swimming? If you ask us, we would probably say “no.” From pools to water parks to splash pads to rivers, we had our swimsuits on a lot over the past few months. Sloan continued to be a fish while Beau’s anxiety around the water lessened. My favorite memory was racing Sloan down the water slides at Spokane County’s Northside Aquatics Center.

Rivers, pools, water parks…we did them all during Summer 2025.

Independence Day – It might have been just a day, but our Fourth of July receives its entire spot on our summer recap. We started the day in Coeur d’Alene at its American Heroes Parade. After an all-American lunch at one of the town’s drive-ins, we ended up at my parents’ house for their annual Independence Day celebration/cookout. From there, we went to Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake for the fireworks show.

Our 2025 Fourth of July was spectacular.

Picnics/Cookouts – Over the past few months, we never let a chance to eat outside slip by. Whether it was with friends, family, our Engaged Encounter group, or in a couple instances the general public, we enjoyed nature while eating meals. From pizza to fried chicken to hamburgers, it all tasted better in the great outdoors. Perhaps the most meaningful cookout of the summer was just this past week when we welcomed Sid’s Uncle Steve and Aunt Sharon to our home for burgers in our backyard.

This is a photo from one of our early summer picnics. We met my sister, Mik, and John in Browns Park and ate pizza.

Hoopfest – My family returned to the streets of downtown Spokane once again to volunteer at Hoopfest. I assumed my usual spot as court monitor while Sidney kept the books and Sloan/Beau helped keep score. It was another fulfilling experience that allowed us to give back while placing ourselves right in the middle of Spokane’s signature event.

My special 2025 Hoopfest crew.

Watching Sports – Nothing says “America” like baseball during the summer. When it came to Summer 2025, my family took this seriously. I took the kids to three Spokane Indians games where we had a blast at each one. What’s not to like about ballpark food, fireworks, running around the bases, and mascot fun? I also had the chance to go with my dad and brother to Seattle for a Mariners game. Don’t worry, we did branch out. In July, I took Sloan and Beau to a Spokane Velocity soccer match where they had just as much fun as they did at the baseball games.

It was Family Feast Night at the last Spokane Indians game we attended this summer! From the Indians to the Mariners to the Velocity, it was a lot of fun!

Weddings and Birthdays – In June, Sidney and I traveled to Brewster, Washington, to watch a couple we mentored—Katie and Tristan—enter into holy matrimony. Then, in August, the whole family drove north to Deer Park, Washington, where we attended the wedding of my niece, Zella, and her now-husband, Thomas. In July, we celebrated my nephew’s 8th birthday by attending his dog-themed party and then just a couple weeks ago we traveled to Walla Walla to attend the birthday bash of my cousin’s daughter who turned 1.

Weddings and birthdays played big roles during Summer 2025.

Parks Parks Parks – We lived it up at green spaces across the area this summer. Balfour, Browns, Discovery, Orchard, Q’emlin, Pavillion, and Riverfront are just a few of the parks where we climbed on the playgrounds and cooled down in the splash pads. We even watched outdoor movies in them! However, my fondest park memories from this summer took place at Audubon Park. It was here where we attended the “Concerts Under the Pines” series. On two different Thursdays in July, we enjoyed live music on perfect summer evenings.

How can an outdoor movie not be pleasant when the scenery is like this? This photo is of Beau sitting in his chair at Balfour Park on July 11, 2025.

Leavenworth Vacation – As you can tell, staying in Spokane all summer offers more than enough to do. However, we made a quick trip to Leavenworth for an end-of-summer vacation. The affordable, wholesome, and sunny adventure was just what we needed before preparing for the start of school.

This photo of my family epitomizes Leavenworth. We took a photo of us all at the exact same place last year and if we return again we will make sure to take another one,

When summer ends in the Inland Northwest, we don’t get too upset. Autumn is gorgeous in this area of the country and with an exciting new school year on the horizon we are ready to transition. However, that’s not to say that we aren’t a little sad to see Summer 2025 pass by. However, In the words of a middle school cliché, we won’t cry because it is over but we will smile because it happened. Don’t Blink.

Officer Beau Thursday Rundown

These summer weeks sure go by fast! I hope everyone is enjoying their August now that we are already in the middle of the month. I have a Thursday Rundown to present so let’s get to my latest five topics…

Summer Wedding – This past Saturday, my niece got married. Zella and her high school sweetheart, Thomas, tied the knot at Belle Gardens in Deer Park, Washington. I admire so much that Zella and Thomas have always just had each other—very few people can say that. The wedding was beautiful and I wish them a lifetime of happiness!

My family poses with Zella and Thomas at their wedding reception.

Officer Beau – Over the weekend. we attended an event where the Spokane Police had a presence. In addition to chatting with us and giving Beau a badge sticker, the police officer helped him get inside the squad car. As one of my friends said, it was better that he was in the front instead of the back.

Dick’s – I had the distinct pleasure of taking Sloan and Beau to Dick’s in downtown Spokane on Friday night. This drive-in is simply a Spokane institution that is frequented by all walks of life. As a freshman in high school, we had to do a report and a presentation on a historical place in Spokane…I chose Dick’s. It was such a gorgeous night to sit at one of the picnic tables and enjoy not just the greasy food but also the scenery.

Dick’s in Spokane is an infamous place. I took the kids there for the first time recently.

AI Training – Yesterday, EWU hosted one of our institution’s Staff In-Service opportunities. The topic? Empowering Staff Through AI. Travis Masingale, a design professor and AI expert, served as the keynote speaker at the event. He challenged us not to use AI platforms as a “vending machine” that we use to throw in a single coin (prompt) for a quick “snack.” Rather, we need to use services like ChatGPT and Gemini in a more nurturing and strategic way to obtain results that are generated by strategic and thorough prompting. At the end of the day, AI is only as good as the instructions we give it.

I had a front row seat at EWU’s Staff In-Service training that focused on AI. Travis Masingale delivered an awesome keynote on how AI is an incredible tool but that it still needs human to drive it.

Walk Off – It has been a wonderful summer at the ballpark with Sloan and Beau. Last night, we attended what might be our final outing to Avista Stadium this season and what a way to go out! It was Rosauers Family Feast Night which meant hot dogs, bottled sodas, and ice cream sandwiches were all $2. Yes, we took advantage. The kids also played with their cousins who came to the game and then ran the bases with them afterwards. An evening that started out a little windy calmed down as the game went along. I really appreciate all that the Spokane Indians organization does to offer a wonderful fan experience.

It was Family Feast Night at the Spokane Indians game last night and we definitely feasted! This is us with our $2 ice cream sandwiches.

Memorial Day Weekend 2025

It was the perfect Memorial Day weekend.

It was the perfect kickoff to the summer for our family. This is Beau and Sloan at Riverfront Park enjoying the Spokane Falls.

Although we never left Spokane, the four of us had a fun-filled yet also relaxing few days off. Thanks to incredible weather and two well-behaved children (because you never know), I don’t think we could have asked for a better start to summer. In order to save these memories for years to come, here are some of the big picture highlights from each day.

It was a hot weekend and luckily Beau and Sloan not only got along but they helped each other out.

Friday – We celebrated the weekend’s kickoff with an evening out. The four of us went to Burger King for dinner as the kids donned the restaurant’s paper crowns. After stocking up on candy from Dollar Tree, we went to the movie theater to watch the new “Lilo and Stitch” movie. It wasn’t bad! But it really didn’t matter the quality of the film at that point because at multiple times I remember just feeling so content sitting in the comfortable chairs sipping on a cold Coke with my family by my side.

Beau and Sloan right outside of the theater before going inside to watch “Lilo and Stitch.”

Saturday – With Sidney working in the yard, I took Sloan and Beau to Avista Stadium for the 5 p.m. Spokane Indians vs. Tri-City Dust Devils baseball game. It was Disney Princess Night and since I made sure we arrived right when the gates opened at 4 p.m., the kids got to meet all four princesses before lines formed (view photos). They also got to do all the activities in the Kids Zone without waiting. As for the game, we ate ballpark food and cheered on the Indians as they dropped a close one, 3-2. After the game, Sloan and Beau had the opportunity to go on the field and run around the bases.

Hanging with Sloan and Beau at Avista Stadium.

Sunday – This was the hottest day of the weekend so naturally we spent a lot of time outside…at three different parks. We started off at Riverfront Park where the kids played on the red wagon, admired the Spokane Falls, and climbed on the Ice Age Playground (view photos). We then went to Orchard Park where members of our Catholic Adult Group met and we celebrated Fr. Jeff Lewis’ 14th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. From there we zipped over to Browns Park where we met my parents for an evening picnic. The park was filled with activity and as I drank a beer while watching Beau play near the splash pad, I thought, summer is here.

Beau and Sloan hanging with out on the red wagon in Riverfront Park.

Monday – After a very busy three days, we used Memorial Day to hang at home. The kids watched their devices while Sid and I watched Dateline. But the signature activity of the day was later that night when the four of us gathered in the living room for one last hurrah. We ate Otter Pops and watched “Wicked.” Although Sid and Sloan went to the theater to watch it originally, they had no problem watching it again with me. I will share my reaction to the film in my next Thursday Rundown.

On Monday night we ate Otter Pops and watched “Wicked.”

I hope you enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend. If the past few days provide any indication of how the rest of the summer will play out, I think we will have a lot of fun in store. Don’t Blink.

Pickleball Thursday Rundown

Let’s open this blog post with the sobering reality that many people in our country are facing unimaginable hardships due to disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires. Please pray for all those impacted and for the conclusion of these disastrous events. On that sad, but necessary, note, here are tonight’s five topics…

Night At Indians Game – On Wednesday evening we finally attended our first Spokane Indians game of the summer. Thanks to our friend Shauna (whose daughter, Aminah, is a great friend/classmate of Sloan) we had free tickets. Even better, Shauna arranged for Sloan to announce the first Indians batter. If you think I am lying, watch her flex her announcing chops here. It was a rainy day but it all cleared by first pitch as it was truly a gorgeous evening at Avista Stadium.

It was a great night for baseball at Avista Stadium as the Spokane Indians hosted the Everett AquaSox.

Other Drink Stand Business Models – Last night I told the story of the drink stand business model we concocted for Sloan. Well, there are many other creative options out there as well. Nearly eight years ago, several groups within a business class at Coastal Carolina University converged on Prince Lawn to compete against each other in a lemonade stand battle. Each group did something different and innovative to attract customers. I loved going from stand to stand and I wrote this blog post highlighting the models and tactics that each group used.

This was one of the lemonade stands I encountered on the Coastal Carolina University campus back in September 2015.

Pickleball – Our new neighborhood has a couple of really well-done pickleball courts and we are all about them. The Resers are now part of the national craze as we have ventured down to the courts multiple times for some family fun. Sidney bought a couple of the Target pickleball sets and they are working just fine for us at the moment. However, if we continue to have a blast playing, we might have to invest in equipment that is a little nicer 😎.

Sloan loves pickleball already!

Strike Force Five – It is kind of a neat concept. Colbert, Fallon, Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver are collaborating on a podcast to support their striking writers. Although I am not a fan of any of them, especially the first three I mentioned by last name, I admire what they are doing. When reading about it, I kept thinking, Could you imagine Letterman, Leno, and Conan doing this in their heyday?

I admire the teamwork of these five comedians.

What A Feat! – Early in my career I was a marketing director for an intercollegiate volleyball team so I understand the challenges of packing the venue with fans. Because of this experience, I was blown away by the 92,003 people who filled the University of Nebraska’s football stadium to watch the Cornhuskers volleyball team host Omaha. Many Division I football programs would be ecstatic if just a third of the fans that showed up in Lincoln went to a game in their venue. What transpired on Wednesday night reveals so much about Nebraska’s passion for women’s sports, the commitment of the institution’s marketing team, and the success of the volleyball program. How cool it must have been to watch that match in-person!

What an incredible and encouraging sight! (photo courtesy of CNN).

Okay, I think I am going to release all of you so you can enjoy a terrific Labor Day weekend. Be safe and savor these last official moments of summer. Don’t Blink.

Princess Thursday Rundown

Happy Friday Eve to everyone! Nothing to see here besides a mid-August Thursday Rundown. If that’s your things, feel free to keep reading because I got five topics coming your way…

Happy Middle Child Day – Let me start off tonight by wishing my fellow “not the oldest and not the youngest” friends a Happy Middle Child Day. I definitely think being the middle kid is an entirely different experience from other children in the family. Several years ago, my mom texted me the below meme on this date. Enough said.

My mom texted me this meme in commemoration of Middle Child’s Day.

My Little Pony – Over the course of a week, I read to Sloan the 10 chapters in the below My Little Pony 5-Minute Stories book. Two observations: First, my daughter watches way too much YouTube because she knew all the characters and most of the stories. The funny thing is I have never observed her watching My Little Pony before. Second, I finally got some context on what My Little Pony is all about. I will never forget visiting Baltimore in August 2014 when BronyCon was taking place. BronyCon is the My Little Pony national convention and I had never seen so many grown men dressed up in brightly colored horse suits in my life. Back then, I didn’t really understand the appeal and, to be honest, I still don’t. But at least I know the basis of the series.

Sloan really enjoyed reading this book and I kind of did too.

Princesses at the Ball Game – We picked the perfect night to go to our first Spokane Indians baseball game of the season. Last Friday we went out to Avista Stadium where the promotion that evening was Storybook Princess Night. Upon walking through the gates, Sloan got to meet Snow White, Ariel, Belle, and Cinderella. All princesses were kind and enthusiastic to Sloan. Hey, if a little fairy tale magic helps convert Sloan to a baseball fan, I can deal with that girly stuff.

Sloan took photos with princesses from Spokane’s Princess Portraits & More at the Spokane Indians game on Aug. 6.

Looking Back on Lays #DoUsAFlavor – Over the span of five years, I enthusiastically taste-tested the Lays potato chip #DoUsAFlavor creations that would come out during the summer and then review them on this blog. Oh, what fun I had! I found great joy pigging out on wacky flavors like chicken & waffles and bacon mac & cheese. I wrote my last post four years ago. That summer’s crop included fried green tomatoes, crispy taco, and everything bagel. If you follow the link to that 2017 post, you will find links to all my other #DoUsAFlavor reviews as well.

Me holding the 2015 #DoUsAFlavor Lay’s potato chips.

Sibling Love – I thought these photos I snapped the other day of Sloan and Beau embracing were too sweet and innocent not to share. They can seriously bother the heck out of each other, but these moments make it all worth it.

Beau and Sloan share a hug.

It is going to be another triple digit weekend so that must mean we have another outdoor wedding to attend. My family will be in Walla Walla the next couple days to celebrate my cousin’s special moment so I am sure you will hear a little bit about it in the ensuing week. Stay cool, friends. Don’t Blink.
