The Harvest Hoedown Lunch With Mrs. Reser

One of my absolute favorite things to do is eat lunch with my wife during the work week. It always feels special because it is rare when both of our schedules align. Sid has her class she must watch over (no, she doesn’t get a lunch break…she eats with her students) and it isn’t always easy for me to ditch campus in the middle of the day. However, about twice each year, the opportunity presents itself for me to head out to Palmetto Bays School and eat lunch with Sidney and her 2nd graders.

Today was one of those days. But this time around, there was a fun twist.

The Timberwolves of Palmetto Bays celebrated their Harvest Hoedown. The  staff dressed in festive clothing and, lucky for me, I got a sneak peek of Mrs. Reser’s outfit before she left the house this morning.

A special lunch was served in conjunction with the Hoedown. The school cooks prepared a delicious BBQ meal for the Palmetto Bays community to enjoy. I had the distinct pleasure of partaking in the feast.

This was today’s Harvest Hoedown menu.

I arrived at the school at 12:30 p.m. and waited at the cafeteria entrance. After a couple minutes, I saw a line of 2nd graders heading right toward me with a teacher in pigtails leading the way. From that point on, I had the pleasure of spending the next half hour with my favorite educator.

I spent time looking at this banner while waiting for Sid and her class to arrive. Go Wolfpack!!

When you are so used to not seeing your significant other during the middle of the day, it is such a nice treat to enjoy each other’s company during the lunch hour. For someone who is married to a teacher, the pleasure is increased even more. You see, when we get together for lunch, there is never a dull moment. I get to walk through the cafeteria line, meet Sid’s students, and visit with her fellow teachers. I soak in the stares and giggles I get from the 2nd graders and I reminisce a bit about when I was in elementary school. It is great fun.

I had a very nice time with Sid this afternoon.

Back to School Thursday Rundown

Hello and good evening! Thanks for returning to Don’t Blink for another riveting Thursday Rundown. Time to roll with this week’s five topics…

Sidney Back At School – Mrs. Reser started her fourth year at Palmetto Bays School yesterday. Understandably so, she was pretty exhausted when she returned home after the first day. This year she has 11 boys and five girls. The testosterone imbalance will make for what Sid calls a “busy” class with plenty of movement. I am excited to see how Sid’s 2017-18 group will grow and develop under her guidance.

This was Sidney at her open house this past Monday. After returning from McClellanville I stopped by and saw her classroom.

Fast Food Movie – This week I watched a movie on Netflix about McDonalds. Titled “The Founder,” it told the story of how Ray Kroc targeted a small burger stand in California called McDonalds and transformed it into a multi-billion dollar company. As someone who has written about McDonalds a few times (here, here, and here) I found the film interesting. I think most of my readers will too but I definitely think it is more of a rainy day type movie. Michael Keaton stars as Kroc, a man who wasn’t afraid to stab people in the back.

I watched “The Founder” this week. I enjoyed the film.

Right On The Money – Every now and then I share some wisdom from my Life’s Little Instructions calendar. In another epiphany since becoming a parent, today’s advice rings especially true. When someone goes out of their way to do something nice for Sloan, it really is an act that makes me so appreciative. I will look at the person who did it and just think to myself, man, that person has so much thoughtfulness. It is a great reminder to me as well to think more about the sons and daughters of my friends.

I totally get this advice.

Too Much? – The latest “dish” I want to share from the @ItsFoodPorn Twitter account might be pushing it a bit. Although I have created my own outlandish recipies in the past and although I love cookie ice cream sandwiches, I don’t know about the donut ice cream sandwich. I think the layer of M&Ms just really pushed it over the top. Perhaps if simple glazed donuts were used as opposed to chocolate donuts I would be a little more prone to approve it. Instead, this is just too much.

This just takes everything a little too far.

Latest On Sloan – Aside from dealing with a cold and battling a fever, Sloan is still an extrememly happy girl. She is starting to laugh and sometimes her chuckle will contain a high pitched shriek of glee that is so cute. We have started introducing baby food as she sure enjoys carrots. I felt bad for her last night as a major storm rolled in around midnight that woke her up, scared her, and sent her into a crying fit. She will turn 23 weeks tomorrow. A Bowling and Hot Dog Thursday Rundown

Ten days out from Christmas and I must admit that I have the holiday spirit. Here we go with my latest Thursday Rundown…

Christmas Bowling Party – Sidney and I are on the holiday party circuit right now. However, we don’t know if any of the gatherings we attend will match the one we went to last Friday. Sidney had her work Christmas party at a bowling alley in Myrtle Beach. I spent the evening hanging out with teachers, eating a lot of finger foods, and of course bowling. Sidney and I played four games and I managed to score in the 140-range for three of them (an achievement for me). For our first ever Christmas bowling party, we had a lot of fun.

Reser Kids as Newborns – When I told the story of our 3D ultrasound, I mentioned that Sidney and I looked at the detailed photos pretty hard. We tried to see if we could distinguish any features in ourselves to our developing daughter. My mom tried to help us determine any similarities by sending me the newborn photos of my sister, my brother, and myself. Verdict is still out on whether any similarities exist with our baby but it provides a great excuse to share these photos.

Killer Dog – I have mentioned this particular food item before, but I need to bring it up again. Last night, we all went out to celebrate my sister-in-law’s 30th birthday at Carolina Roadhouse, a great restaurant in Myrtle Beach. This place is home to a giant hot dog called the Killer Dog. I have ordered it on a couple of other occasions and I made sure to order it last night. The best part was the reaction of my mother-in-law when I told her I was going to get it again.

“But they have such a good menu…” she reasoned.

And she was absolutely right. Carolina Roadhouse is a fabulous restaurant with a mouthwatering menu. In fact, it is such a good place that my parents went there twice when they came this past summer for the wedding. But I had thought about that Killer Dog the whole day at work and by the time I sat down at the table I was craving it. I now have leftovers for the next week.

Gold Again – Our social media program at Coastal Carolina University recently received more national recognition. I introduced #CCU Keys to Success as our 2016 summer social media Facebook campaign. Just this past week, it received the gold award in the Education Digital Marketing Awards. We sent members of our alumni community keyboard tattoos to put on the keyboards of their work computers. Once they applied the tattoos, they would take photos (one photo of their hands on their keyboard and one full frontal shot) and send them back to me. With the images, they also included a paragraph on the literal keys to success they learned at Coastal. The images and the testimonials made for great posts throughout the summer.

From the Archives – I have a few blog posts I wrote over the years on December 15 to present to you for your reading consideration. Three years ago I wrote about five shopping mall trends I noticed while out doing my holiday shopping. Two years ago I gave my opinion on an event that portrays Santa in a bad light and that has gotten progressively worse over the years. Then, one year ago on this date, before fake news was even a thing, I explained how I fell for a Facebook hoax. Once again, take your pick on what you want to click on.

I suggest this weekend you take an hour or so to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in front of the Christmas tree. In my opinion, there is no better way to get in the holiday spirit. Don’t Blink.

A Thursday Rundown from the Speaking Circuit

Hope everyone is enjoying a nice Holy Thursday. Speaking of Thursday, it is time for my latest Thursday Rundown blog post…

Speaking at an Elementary School Career Day – I spent the morning serving as a guest speaker at the Palmetto Bays Career Day. I had the privilege of presenting to various classes of second, third, and fourth graders. I had never talked about my job with such a young group of students before so I spent some time stressing over how I would deliver my message. As is usually the case when I enter a classroom, I had a great time. I brought a couple Coastal students with me to chat with the students about the importance of college and they were a bigger hit than I was! It was a fantastic morning.

Speaking to a College Class – Talk about a major contrast! After speaking to kids in the second grade who knew little about social media, I hustled back to campus and talked to college students enrolled in a social media class! I was invited by Dr. Mark Flynn to discuss social media ethics with his social media in health contexts class. I spoke for an hour and answered some great questions asked by the students. It was a strange adjustment going from an elementary audience to a university audience but after the first couple minutes it was smooth sailing.

Publix – In the southeast there is a very popular grocery store chain called Publix. It is one of those places that takes freshness, amenities, and item selection to a whole different level. A store recently opened up in the Myrtle Beach area and I had to check it out. Sidney and I walked around our area’s new Publix this past weekend and I must say I was impressed. Although multiple items made my mouth water, nothing called my name more than the peanut butter pie ice cream I spotted. I love peanut butter, I love pie, and I love ice cream…how amazing must peanut butter pie ice cream be?! Soon enough I will know!

Television Dilemma – In last week’s Thursday Rundown I mentioned that I have two new favorite television shows, “Race for the White House” and “The Family.” Those who read this blog know I also have a longstanding favorite TV show, “Bar Rescue.” What are the chances that all three weekly programs would be on at the same time on the same day?! Such was the case this past Sunday when “Race for the White House” was moved to the 9 p.m. Sunday slot. Keeping in mind that the new “Bar Rescue” episode would be replayed throughout the week and knowing that Sidney and I could just watch “The Family” on Apple TV the next night, I opted to watch “Race for the White House.”

Wedding Update #25 – I detailed our meal at our rehearsal dinner venue earlier in the week, but I saved the most important wedding development for this update. This past Saturday, Sidney and I went to Zales in the mall and bought our wedding rings for each other. It was a nice outing and much, much easier on my wallet than the engagement ring experience. Sidney’s ring was in stock and we took it home but mine is being ordered.
