A RAD-iculous Morning

It was a dozen years ago when I participated in a 5K fad that was sweeping the country. In May 2013, I joined friends to participate in Color Me Rad, one of the popular color run circuits that centered on covering runners in vibrantly-colored chalky powder. That morning in Missoula was a complete blast and I told myself that I would do another color run soon.

A photo of me with friends at the conclusion of the 2013 Color Me Run event in Missoula.

However, like all fads, color run popularity waned over the years. The opportunities to participate were few and far between. But another hallmark of fads is that often they have mini resurgences. Imagine my excitement when I learned that Color Me Rad was going to stage an event in the Spokane area! I immediately signed Sloan and me up.

The night before the Color Me Rad event, I put out our very white shirts.

This past Saturday, we ventured out to the MODE Campus in Liberty Lake to participate in the Color Me Rad event. Organizers offered two 5K races with a family-focused 1-mile run sandwiched between. I tested my own fitness by running the opening 5K race at 9 a.m. Not only did I get a nice 3-mile workout, but it warmed me up on what was a cold June morning.

A couple moments before I left for Liberty Lake, I snapped this photo with Sloan before we got rad.

Once I finished, I walked back to the parking lot and grabbed Sloan who was dropped off by Sidney. She saw the bright colors on my clothing/skin and couldn’t wait to get to the starting line. Sloan excitedly grabbed my hand and we walked to the giant inflatable arch with “START” written on it. We spent the 15 minutes prior to 10 a.m. listening to the live band and going through the warm up exercises led by event organizers.

A few minutes before 10 a.m., I snapped this photo of Sloan at the starting line.

At the command of the emcee who led us in one giant shout of “COLOR ME RAD,” we crossed the starting line and the race was on. Well, it is about the furthest thing from a race as you can get, but you get the picture. Sloan and I navigated the zig-zag course with joy, a rare occurrence considering running isn’t exactly my daughter’s favorite thing to do. But how can’t you be exuberant when color bombs are showering upon you?

The course was lined with different color stations where volunteers would throw the chalky powder on your personal canvas. Sloan embraced the color and by the time we neared the finish line, her dark hair was pretty much completely pink.

Toward the end of the run, Sloan’s hair was completely pink.

Once we crossed the finish line, the fun wasn’t over. Sloan and I were each given color pouches (and bottled water) to use as we wished. We had a blast using the fresh powder to make ourselves look even more RADiculous.

A selfie after we crossed the Color Me Rad selfie. Compare this to the first selfie we took in our pristine white shirts!

We then ventured over to the stage where the emcee was leading the crowd in “color throws.” Color packets were distributed and then everyone threw up their powder in unison. While this was occurring, the cloud of color was amplified by a Color Me Rad staffer who used a fire extinguisher to blow out thick bursts of color. Sloan absolutely loved it.

An obligatory finish line photo of Sloan.

Although we could have stayed longer as a big party was set to start after the conclusion of the second 5K heat, we had other stuff to do (like hang out at home and eat chicken nuggets). I draped large garbage bags over the backs of my car seats and placed beach towels on the cushions. We then headed home where Sid was waiting to collect our clothes and give Sloan a bath.

What an awesome time we had and they even gave Sloan a medal. Thanks to MODE Campus for hosting Color Me Rad.

I want to thank MODE Campus for reviving the Color Me Rad brand and organizing the event. I am trying to find fun ways to get Sloan active and this opportunity definitely fit the bill. It also brought back some nostalgia for me. Although a little more sun would have been nice, it was otherwise a perfect morning. Don’t Blink.

May Day Thursday Rundown

April showers bring May flowers! A new month has arrived and you can’t help but feel cheerful and optimistic during the month of May. I am ready with the latest Thursday Rundown…

Hungry Howie’s – A new pizza place opened up this week right by our home. Hungry Howie’s is a pizza chain that specializes in flavored crust pizza. Last night, the joint was offering 1-topping large pizzas for $6.99. We decided to try it out. We ordered a pepperoni pizza with garlic herb crust and some wings. Hate to say it, but the pizza itself is very average. The flavored crust was pretty good though and I couldn’t complain about the wings. However, with two other pizza places already right in the vicinity, I don’t think Howie’s proved it is the best option for the Reser household.

We ate pizza from Hungry Howie’s last night. It was average.

Color Me Rad – Four years ago today I ran Color Me Rad, a version of the enormously popular 5K color races that swept the nation in the early to mid 2010s. I had a blast and thought I would do more themed 5K races in the future. Unfortunately, my good intention has yet to reach fruition. Making it even more shameful is I now live in Myrtle Beach, a place with beautiful weather and no shortage of fun races to take part in. My goal is to participate in at least one 5K over the next year.

What I looked like at the conclusion of the Color Me Rad race in 2013.

Post 10 Concerts – The latest Facebook fad is to list 10 concerts with nine of them representing shows you actually went to. You are also supposed to insert one concert you did not attend and see if your followers can guess it. I didn’t want to do this on my actual Facebook page because I wanted to save it for my blog! Can you guess the bogus show? The answer is revealed at the end of this blog post.

1. Blake Shelton
2. Elton John
3. Carrie Underwood
4. Willie Nelson
5. Bob Dylan
6. Britney Spears
7. Tim McGraw
8. Gym Class Heroes
9. Brad Paisley
10. Mike Jones

Sandy Wexler – Adam Sandler made a movie exclusively for Netflix called “Sandy Wexler.” Centering on a washed up, eccentric agent (Sandler) who has a knack for signing underwhelming clients, Sandy finally has a break when he discovers a superstar young talent (Jennifer Hudson). Sidney and I watched it over the course of two nights and although it is a little long, I did get a lot of laughs out of it. The best part? The numerous cameos!! If you are a big Adam Sandler fan then go ahead and watch it; if you aren’t, I say don’t waste your time.

We watched Adam Sandler’s “Sandy Wexler” this week. You probably won’t want to waste your time.

Sloan Photos – Another Thursday means it is time for another round of Sloan photos. Here are some of the latest.

The latest collection of Sloan photos for you to look at.

Thank you all for taking the time to read my blog. Special shout out to all the Coastal Carolina University students graduating this weekend. Did you figure out the concert I have not attended? If you guessed Britney Spears, you are correct. Don’t Blink.

Color Me Rad

This past Friday it seemed like all of my social media outlets became flooded with talk about a certain race taking place the following day. Somehow I was able to block out all the hype about this particular race starting with the announcement that it would in fact be staged in Missoula all the way up through this past week. However, with the excitement reaching a breaking point on Friday with seemingly the whole city of Missoula participating, I got sucked in.

Yep, Brent Reser got registered for Color Me Rad!

Well, check that, I really didn’t get registered, I got very lucky. My friend had a full sponsored team for the race. However, at the last minute one of the girls on the team pulled out. Chelsea asked me if I wanted to fill in and after asking her a couple questions, I committed to a 9 a.m. run the next morning. I was about to get rad!

Don’t know what Color Me Rad is? Let me explain real fast. Color Me Rad is a racing tour that goes around the country staging 5K runs. Of course the defining factor of these runs is that race participants get doused in all sorts of vibrant colors throughout the race. Using this corn starch powder and a type of liquid spray, participants get turned into human rainbows. The color mayhem begins right at the starting line and continues at certain spots throughout the course and then culminates with one last color shower at the finish line. Besides all the powder and spray that volunteers and race organizers throw at you throughout the race, you are also able to purchase as many colored powder bags that you desire to add to the fun…and let me tell you, people take full advantage.

BEFORE: The morning of Color Me Rad.

BEFORE: The morning of Color Me Rad.

From what I have been told, these types of color runs are nothing new. They have been around for decades and besides Color Me Rad, there are other color race tour competitors out there. Well, consider me ignorant because before this past week, I had no idea that these things existed. Probably for the better though because it enabled me to really experience something so unique and fun with absolutely no preconceived notions going in.

Missoula’s Color Me Rad took place in a desolate location about nine miles outside of Missoula. Of course come race day that desolate location transformed into a colorful paradise. After parking my car in an overgrown field, I strolled over to the start line. Big crowds dressed in white and silly costumes were getting ready to run. People were already spreading the bags of colored powder on one another, music blared. The race is organized in “waves”, basically different heats of people taking off at half hour intervals to make sure everyone gets an adequate colorful experience. I was in the first wave of the day at 9 a.m. As we waited at the start line, the race organizer said a few words before sending us off. Let me tell you, this dude was exactly what I envisioned when I thought about what someone who was in charge of a race called “Color Me Rad” would look/talk like. He was your stereotypical hippie with long braided hair and a straggly beard. He wore a silver vest with matching silver pants. While talking to us, he told us that “Some stupid people did a bad thing in Boston.” Interesting way to say it. He then asked us to take a moment of silence. After that moment he roared into the microphone “Let’s get RAD for Boston.” He then started the race.

We were blessed with amazing, sunny weather for the race. I chose to run the whole way instead of doing the courteous thing and waiting for my teammates. But I couldn’t help it. It was just so nice running through the course with the anticipation of what each color station would hold. The course was never crowded and I actually ran through many of the color stations all by myself, thus insuring that I got hit especially hard by the colors and spray from the volunteers. Despite running mostly uphill and on a trail layered with rocks, it was the easiest 3.1 miles I had ever ran in my life. When I got to the finish line and ran through the last cloud of color, I wanted to keep going.

Post race was fun too! After reuniting with my teammates we took pictures both with our phones and then at the professional photo station that was set up to capitalize on the racing color high that everyone had. Good music continued to play and people kept buying more of the color packets to try to get even more rainbowish than they already were. Meanwhile, the 9:30 a.m. wave got started as the hippie race organizer fired them up. To take a phrase from this very interesting fellow, I then “peaced out.”

I would definitely recommend Color Me Rad. It is such a fun concept and I really did enjoy myself on Saturday. Believe me, anyone can do it. The race is not timed and everyone participating is just there to have a good time. Although you will have to take a longer shower than usual and you might have to throw away some clothing, it is well worth it. On Saturday morning, I was definitely rad. Don’t Blink.
